On this day

1995 The unofficial heavyweight championship of the cricket world began in sensational style when Australia reduced West Indies to 6 for 3 in the first half-hour in Bridgetown. Australia were weakened by the absence of Craig McDermott - they had Paul Reiffel and Brendon Julian taking the new ball - but Glenn McGrathshowed the first signs of greatness, and his second-innings five-for, which included the key wicket of Brian Lara, set the Aussies up for a ten-wicket win. In the first innings Lara had gone controversially after flashing 65, caught by Steve Waugh at gully even though replays showed the ball touching the ground. 1997 A better day for West Indies in Barbados, and another of their famous get-out-of-jail bowling performances. India needed only 120 to win the third Test, but they were cut off at 81, with only VVS Laxman and extras reaching double figures. In Brian Lara'sfirst match as captain, he crucially caught his opposite number, Sachin Tendulkar, for 4.

Yuvraj Singh

Yuvraj Singh burst on the scene in the ICC Knockout Trophy in 2000 where batting in his second match against Australia, he scored a match-winning 84, impressed one and all with his superb fielding and went on to win the Man of the Match award. In Yuvraj, India had found a great talent but soon that was getting wasted due to his attitude and he was dropped from the team. Yuvraj fought back into the Indian team with some huge scores in domestic cricket and since then has become one of the most stylish Indian batsmen who when gets going can win the match on his own, not just by his batting but also by his left-arm spin. Yuvraj is one of the mainstays of the Indian batting line-up in ODIs and T20s and but is yet to cement his place in the Test team. Yuvraj played a significant role in India's Twenty20 World Cup triumph in 2007 in which he hit Stuart Broad for six sixes in an over. Just before the 2011 World Cup, Yuvraj was dogged by poor form but the Indian selectors backed him and that paid off as he scored runs and picked up wickets consistently throughout the tournament and was named player of the 2011 World Cup.

West Indies' wild celebration aimed at chirpy James Faulkner

West Indies captain Darren Sammy got a rousing applause from members of the media as he entered the conference arena with his pads still on, before coming up with this retort: It feels better to hit a guy, who was talking a lot. This was in response to Australian James Faulkner's comment that he didn't like the West Indians. "Cricket is a game of action. It all happens in the field. It feels good to come good when it mattered. I believe this win would hurt them (Australians) and James Faulkner certainly wouldn't like the West Indians," Sammy said after his 13-ball-34 almost shut the door on the Australians in the ICC World T20. Faulkner had said earlier that he does not like the West Indians and Sammy said that he didn't pay heed to what the all-rounder has to say. But today he was in a mood to talk. "It feels better to hit a guy, who was talking a lot," he said taking an obvious dig at Faulkner. About playing two dot balls, he said, "I knew I had to hit sixes. But then we are known as a six-hitting team (referring to Suresh Raina's comments before India vs West Indies game). Happy to have crossed the line today as the match was important for both teams." About Chris Gayle's angry 'Gangnam Dance', Sammy said, "Chris is the leader of our dancing group. We play with flair and love to celebrate our success." About Gayle's form, the skipper said, "I had said that Chris is hitting the ball well at the nets, we all know how dangerous he can be if he is there at the wicket." His last shot was the typical 'Helicopter Shot' that is patented by Dhoni. Asked about it, Sammy replied, "I knew that he would be bowling fuller and I had moved towards off-stump. Probably, I would been out if I missed the line but it was one such day when it came off well. That's why I say that cricket is played in the field. As far as the 'Helicopter Shot' is concerned, it will remain Dhoni's shot and not mine."

Wanted to spend time in the middle, says MS Dhoni

India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni on Friday said it was important for him to bat up the order as he was not getting any opportunity to spend time in the middle since the top-order was performing consistently well for them. India defeated both Pakistan and West Indies by seven wickets in their first two matches of the ongoing World Twenty20 with Dhoni not getting to bat. The captain, who missed the Asia Cup in Bangladesh held before this biennial event, batted ahead of Yuvraj Singh at number four in the modest run-chase against Bangladesh. "We have good players and the next few games are going to be extremely tough. I hadn't batted in a while and asked Yuvi if he was ok. Now everyone in the top five have had a bat, Dhoni sealing India's win with a six off Ziaur Rehman. India thrashed the hosts by eight wickets to become the first team to qualify for the semifinals of the T20 World Cup. "No celebrations at the moment. We were slightly unlucky in Sri Lanka (in 2012), we lost only one game and didn't qualify for the next round," said Dhoni. When asked about not being tested in the tournament so far,Dhoni replied,"We can't ask Virat Kohli to hit wicket and come back (to make games interesting). We can't do much about that (lack of challenge)." Bangladesh skipper Mushfiqur Rahim said their batsmen failed to compile big scores and threw away their wickets. "Whoever gets set, ends up throwing their wicket. Definitely it's not happening at the moment. After you lose a couple of wickets, you need to preserve the wickets, but also score runs because they had some good spinners," Rahim said. Rahim said they were looking for a total of around 150 to challenge India. "We thought about 150-plus as a good total, but unfortunately ended up below that. We have two more games to go, so hopefully we can take some positives out of them." Off-spinner R Ashwin, adjudged man-of-the-match, picked two wickets at the top to peg Bangladesh back after India had put them in. He gave away just 15 run in his four overs. "Spinners have enjoyed good success, Mishy has won two Man of the Match awards, so I guess it was my turn today. A few difficult matches coming up now," he said. "We have played some excellent cricket, we don't need to be too worried

Yuvraj needs just one innings to get back to form: Rohit Sharma

"As far as Yuvraj is concerned, it's a matter of just one innings. If one innings goes well, he will get back confidence. He has been a fantastic player for India having won us a lot of T20 matches in the past including World Cups. "I hope that tomorrow is the day when he gets that one elusive innings, needed to get back to form.

Cricket: India enter World Twenty20 semi-finals

India roared into the semi-finals of the World Twenty20 with a eight-wicket demolition of hosts Bangladesh in a Super-10 group two match in Dhaka on Friday. Leg-spinner Amit Mishra claimed 3-26 as India restricted Bangladesh to 138-7 and then surpassed the modest target with nine deliveries to spare at the Sher-e-Bangla stadium. Rohit Sharma made 56 and Virat Kohli remained unbeaten on 57, sharing a 100-run stand for the second wicket after Shikhar Dhawan had been dismissed for one in the third over. India's third successive win in the Super-10s assured them a place in the semi-finals even before their last league match against Australia on Sunday. Australia, who lost to the West Indies earlier on Friday, are virtually out of the race after two defeats. Barring any major upsets in the last two round of matches, Pakistan and the West Indies will battle for the second semi-final spot from the group.

MS Dhoni has done nothing wrong and is innocent: BCCI tells Supreme Court

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Friday told the Supreme Court that the allegations that have been made against Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni in the context of an investigation into alleged corruption in the Indian Premier League (IPL) are false. The Indian captain has also been "wrongly vilifed" by the media, the BCCI representatives told the apex court on Friday. India captain Dhoni also leads the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) that is owned by N Srinivasan, whose son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan was indicted last month for illegal betting in the IPL last year. In court, Harish Salve, who is representing petitioner Aditya Verma, the secretary of Bihar Cricket Association, said that during the investigation, Mr Dhoni had lied about Mr Meiyappan's role, describing him as "just a cricket enthusiast", though he is a key member of the team's management. But the BCCI's lawyers said that Mr Dhoni did not make that statement. The Supreme Court on Friday ruled that former captain and Sunil Gavaskar will take charge of the IPL tournament that begins on April 16 in UAE. The corruption controversy erupted last year after several players, including former Indian pace bowler Sreesanth, were arrested by Indian police for spot fixing and later banned by the BCCI.

Virat Kohli can be better than Sachin Tendulkar, says Kapil Dev

Virat Kohli can be better than Sachin Tendulkar, says Kapil Dev Kapil Dev admits there can be no second Sachin Tendulkar but is confident that Virat Kohli has the right talent to break all records in international cricket if he manages to remain free of injuries. Former captain Kapil Dev on Tuesday said that Indian batting's mainstay Virat Kohli will rewrite more records than anyone else in world cricket and believed the Delhi batsman has realistic chances of "bettering" even Sachin Tendulkar's career graph if he remains injury-free. "Without any doubt Kohli will make more records than anybody else. I don't compare, there cannot be a second Don Bradman, and there cannot be another Sachin Tendulkar. But yes, Kohli has got amazing talent, it's huge for a 24-year-old, and maybe, he can be better than Tendulkar.

Cricket: India board chief on brink after court drubbing

India's beleaguered cricket chief N. Srinivasan faced growing calls to resign from within his own ranks Wednesday after the Supreme Court warned that they would otherwise order him to quit. The day after a panel of judges slammed Srinivasan's "nauseating" refusal to resign as cricket board president while allegations of illegal betting and spot-fixing are investigated, commentators said the man regarded as the most powerful in world cricket had suffered a "sledgehammer" blow. Srinivasan, who takes over in July as head of the International Cricket Council, has yet to make a statement on the judges' comments over investigations into a scandal which involves his son-in-law. But in a sign that his iron grip is dramatically loosening, a vice president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) described Srinivasan's position as "untenable". "Mr Srinivasan's position may have become untenable as the BCCI president following the observations made by the Supreme Court," vice president Ravi Savant said. "He should step down, else the BCCI and Indian cricket will lose credibility." Another board vice president, Shivlal Yadav, said the BCCI would "have to follow" the views of the court, whose damning comments dominated media coverage less than a fortnight before a general election. "SC tongue-lashing sets stage for Srini's exit" was the front-page headline of The Times of India, while the Mail Today said Srinivasan had been "given out" by the court. - 'He needs to go' - "He must respect the law and do what the Supreme Court wants him to do," the World Cup-winning former Test star Mohinder Amarnath told AFP. "He needs to step down." During Tuesday's hearing in New Delhi, Justice A.K. Patnaik said there could be "no fair investigation" into the betting scandal while Srinivasan remained at the helm of the board. "If you don't step down, then we will pass an order," added Patnaik, who heads the two-judge panel. The bench is looking at a damning report that it commissioned last year into wrongdoing in the Indian Premier League (IPL) following a betting and spot-fixing scandal that rocked the Twenty20 tournament. Released in February, the report concluded that Srinivasan's son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan could be guilty of illegal betting on IPL games. The report, by a panel headed by retired judge Mukul Mudgal, suggested Meiyappan may have passed on team information to outsiders for illegal betting, but did not specify what information or to whom. "There are no definite findings by the Mudgal committee but the allegations are of a very serious nature," Patnaik told the court. Meiyappan was the team principal of Chennai Super Kings, an IPL franchise owned by Srinivasan's India Cements company and captained by national skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Sharda Ugra, a senior editor with the influential Cricinfo website, said there appeared no way out for Srinivasan. "His position has been untenable for a while," Ugra told AFP. "The court has come down with a sledgehammer. "I am not sure there can be a way out. The BCCI cannot afford to annoy the Supreme Court anymore." The court was due to reconvene on Thursday although it was not clear whether the judges would carry through their threat to impose an order for Srinivasan's resignation then. India is the most powerful country in world cricket due to its vast television audience, which enables the board to generate almost 70 percent of the game's revenues. But the BCCI has often found itself at the centre of controversy, with Srinivasan's predecessor Lalit Modi now living in exile in London as he battles corruption charges.
