The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Friday told the Supreme Court that the allegations that have been made against Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni in the context of an investigation into alleged corruption in the Indian Premier League (IPL) are false.
The Indian captain has also been "wrongly vilifed" by the media, the BCCI representatives told the apex court on Friday. India captain Dhoni also leads the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) that is owned by N Srinivasan, whose son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan was indicted last month for illegal betting in the IPL last year.
In court, Harish Salve, who is representing petitioner Aditya Verma, the secretary of Bihar Cricket Association, said that during the investigation, Mr Dhoni had lied about Mr Meiyappan's role, describing him as "just a cricket enthusiast", though he is a key member of the team's management.
But the BCCI's lawyers said that Mr Dhoni did not make that statement.
The Supreme Court on Friday ruled that former captain and Sunil Gavaskar will take charge of the IPL tournament that begins on April 16 in UAE. The corruption controversy erupted last year after several players, including former Indian pace bowler Sreesanth, were arrested by Indian police for spot fixing and later banned by the BCCI.
